The Shire of Manjimup continues to progress towards a holistic safe system.
The Shire of Manjimup has worked closely with Main Roads WA to commence a trial to apply centre line markings with barrier and overtaking markings on narrow sealed (5.5m or greater) roads of significance determined by Roads 2040. The roads met the Main Roads WA warrants for seal width but didn’t have the traffic volumes to apply a centre line treatment. The Shire used their own funds to deliver this trial and is in the process of working through to propose the allocation of $50,000 every two years to complete additional projects.
The Shire recognised that the narrow-sealed, high-speed roads pose a risk to drivers resulting in uncertain positioning of their vehicles when passing other vehicles. A centre line provides guidance to drivers about their required position on the road and can be used to discourage overtaking or ‘accidental’ drifting from the lane.
To achieve a zero-harm future, all high-speed roads would require separation between on-coming vehicles, removal or protection against roadside hazards, recovery area (audio-tactile line marking and sealed shoulders) for ‘accidental’ drifting or a reduction in speed limits to survivable tolerances. This is not always possible and limited by funding and the environment, however implementing supporting treatments, such as this one, is an important step towards a safe system and aims to progressively improve the safety of the road network.
