Road Safety Strategies
WALGA’s RoadWise aims to contribute to both the National and State road safety strategies by:
- Engaging and supporting Local Governments to enhance capacity and capability to adopt and apply safe system aligned policies and practice.
- Ensuring that child car seat safety fitting services are accessible to parents and carers of young children.
As part of WALGA, the peak industry body for Local Governments in WA, RoadWise is uniquely placed to work closely with Local Governments.
Local Governments are responsible for designing, building, and maintaining an extensive road network. Local Governments manage 86.2% of the road network in Western Australia where 55.6% of all killed or serious injury crashes occur.
As system designers within the safe system framework, Local Governments have a strategic and operational road safety role as road managers, planning authorities and fleet managers, in addition to their community development and leadership roles.
Local Governments are crucial partners in the translation of safe system principles into practice, and WALGA is in a strong position to positively influence and work with the sector to build support and local capacity that contributes to the collective road safety effort.
RoadWise's focus is to continue to engage Local Governments in best practice road safety to build an informed and committed sector with safe system principles integrated in the way the local road network is managed, and in doing so, contribute to the achievement of the medium and long-term goals and targets of the both the National and State road safety strategies.
WALGA’s RoadWise is also informed and guided by international best practice in road safety including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
