The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has delivered another best practice example of a road design underpinned by the safe system principles under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.
The new road design project focused on enhancing road safety within the school zone at St Mary’s Primary School in Kalgoorlie through strategically designed road treatments. The project was delivered in response to concerns raised by the community that the existing road environment was a safety concern for children.
Road design plays an important role in encouraging safe driving behaviour. The treatments applied by the City included narrowing of lanes, one way flow, a centre median, kerb extensions and shared footpaths to better delineate and control vehicle movement, slow vehicle speeds and improve sight lines. The self-explaining road design gives drivers a clear impression of how to drive in the school zone, limiting their ability to take risks and guiding compliant driving behaviour.
Mayor John Bowler said “The new road treatments have been designed to minimise bottlenecks and ensure better traffic flow within the school zone. Included in the design is a new ’kiss and ride’ zone which will minimise congestion and risk when used properly by parents and carers, when children are dropped off and picked up.”
Local Government has a strategic role in ensuring road safety on local roads. The Black Spot Program supports Local Government to apply treatments to reduce the risk of crashes. This involvement is critical for WA to reach its target of 50-70% reduction in Killed or Serious Injury (KSI) crashes by 2030.
